Empowering The Southern Roots Organization
      (A non-profit organization)

A distinct way to educate, motivate, and demonstrate to the youth and the community what southern living, culture, and history are all about.

Empowering The Southern Roots Organization knows that our strength lies not only in the words we stand by but most importantly through the actions of our initiatives. Back in 2015, our Non-Profit Organization realized that our youth needed to know more about their history, culture, and the need for farmers, we know that by working together we can overcome our challenges much more efficiently; and that is why we ultimately decided to launch Empowering The Southern Roots Organization.

We are working towards a Brighter Future,  connecting lost Heritage, culture, African Americans once had. The Restoration of this particular Historical House "The Colvin Plantation House'' will serve as a monument and Museum. It is listed in the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage and sits on 177 acres of farmland now owned by an African American Farmer. This House was built in 1832 the owner had 25 Slaves. The youth will be educated about Historial homes, the landowners, and the Farming technique that was used in the 1800's living as a slave. Empowering the Southern Roots Organization sponsor Folk Root Festivals, Art and Craft, demonstrations of Hand made baskets, and how to grow food. There is a shortage of minority Farmers we will encourage the youth to become Future Farmers of America and self sufficient.

Turning Interest Into Action

Dealing with the challenges of today requires problem-solvers who bring different perspectives and people who are willing to take risks. Empowering the Southern Roots Organization emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community through historical and cultural awareness, along with a desire to demonstrate actions verses words. My name is Wanda Hicks-Hughes, I am the founder of The Southern Roots Organization. In 2015, we began this mission driven by progressive ideas, bold actions, and a sturdy foundation of support from our local community. This is truly my heart-felt desire and purpose to bring awareness and education to all about our southern roots. Understanding our past, allows us the opportunity to advance forward.
